Gestalt grouping

People perceive elements as groups based on proximity, similarity, closure and continuity.

Why it matters

Similarity groups things that look alike (shape, color, size) even when spacing is equal. Proximity would group by distance instead.

How to apply it

  • Group related items with space
  • Use shared color or shape to link items
  • Use enclosure (a box or tint) for strong grouping

Common mistakes

  • Equal spacing between unrelated items
  • Using the same style for things that aren't related
