Readability

Short sentences and familiar words make text easier to read; Flesch Reading Ease measures it.

Why it matters

Flesch Reading Ease rewards shorter sentences and shorter words. 60 to 70 is often labelled 'standard', higher is easier.

Edit big to small: fix the message and structure first, then words, then polish. Proofreading a paragraph you later cut wastes time.

How to apply it

  • Aim for a score around 60 or higher for general readers
  • Split sentences over about 25 words
  • Prefer short words

Common mistakes

  • Chasing a score over meaning
  • Long nested sentences
