How the score works
The Flesch Reading Ease formula is 206.835 − 1.015 × (words per sentence) − 84.6 × (syllables per word). Higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read comfortably. Web copy usually works best at 60 or above.
Scores are a smoke alarm, not a verdict. Short words and short sentences raise the score, but clarity also depends on structure, specifics and knowing your reader. Syllables and passive voice are estimated, so read the highlights with judgement.
